〖A Concise History of the Classical Guitar(古典吉他简史,by Graham Wade)〗
Foreward(前言简介-续)
In my first general history of the instrument, Traditions of the Classical Guitar (1980), I wrote in the Preface:
In a noisy and raucous age the simple voice of the classical guitar takes the listener back to an intimate, personal musical environment. The guitar's natural sound, being unamplified, corresponds to the dynamics of the speaking human voice; its simple directness appeals immensely in the somewhat dehumanized context of industrial society. For this reason the instrument has become popular in a great many countries, often cutting across traditional cultural boundaries.
Since these words were written we have all experienced many changes whatever country we live in. But my personal credo about the classic guitar has not significantly altered.
This book could not have been written without the help of a number of people. In particular, I owe an immense debt of gratitude to the following: to Julian Bream, for his wisdom and inspirational guidance over the years, to Catherine Dickinson and Andrew Liepins of the Spanish Guitar Center, Nottingham, UK, for infallible assistance in the provision of essential music, editions, recordings, etc., to Don Alberto L6pez Poveda, of Linares, Spain, for material, information and enlightenment on Andres Segovia and Spanish culture, and to William Bay, for his support, encouragement and patience at all times.
Above all, I am indebted to my wife, Elizabeth, for her extended and patient editorial work, for her determination, resilience and scholarly acumen.
